I’m absolutely obsessed with in-home sessions! They let me capture your beautiful family (and your pets!) right where you feel most at ease — at home. These sessions offer a sweet peek into your everyday life, turning those fleeting, ordinary moments into memories you’ll cherish forever.

This little guide will help you prepare for your family photo session so you can feel relaxed, enjoy the process, and make the most of your time together.

1. What to wear

Keep it comfortable and true to you.

Choose clothes you feel good in — soft fabrics, loose fits, and cozy textures always photograph beautifully. You’ll be moving, cuddling, maybe even sitting on the floor with your kids or pets — comfort is key!

Stick to soft, neutral tones.

Warm, earthy colors or muted pastels work best indoors — think beige, cream, taupe, rust, or soft sage. These shades keep the focus on your family and emotions, not the clothes.

Avoid bright colors and bold patterns.

Vibrant tones, logos, or busy prints can distract from the calm, timeless feeling of your photos. Solid colors or gentle textures (like knits, linen, or cotton) are perfect.

Coordinate, don’t match.

Choose a color palette of 3–4 tones and let each family member wear something that fits within it. This creates a cohesive look without everyone wearing the same outfit.

Bare feet or cozy socks are welcome.

Since we’ll be indoors, barefoot photos feel natural and homey. If you prefer socks, pick neutral ones that blend with your outfit and surroundings.

Add soft layers and textures.

Cardigans, sweaters, or a flowy robe add movement and warmth. These layers photograph beautifully and give a relaxed, intimate feel.

Think about your home’s colors.

Choose tones that complement your space — for example, if your home has warm wooden accents, stick to earthy or warm neutrals; if it’s bright and minimal, soft pastels or creams look lovely.

2. Preparing your home

Tidy up just a little — not too much!

You don’t need to deep-clean your home. A quick declutter of surfaces in the main areas (like the living room, bedroom, or nursery) is enough. A bit of lived-in charm — books, toys, blankets — adds warmth and authenticity to your photos.

Choose your favorite spots.

Think of areas that feel meaningful: your couch for cuddles, the kitchen for baking with little ones, or the nursery for sweet snuggles. These spaces help tell your family’s story.

Open the curtains and let the light in.

Natural light is everything! On the day of your session, open curtains and blinds to let in as much daylight as possible. Turn off overhead lights and lamps for a softer, more natural look.

Add cozy details.

A few textured blankets, throw pillows, or fresh flowers can add warmth to your space. You don’t need to overthink it — simple, cozy touches go a long way.

Keep it relaxed and real.

Your home doesn’t have to look like a magazine spread. What matters most is the feeling — laughter, connection, and the love you share in your everyday spaces.

3. Preparing Your Kids

Keep things light and fun.

Let your kids know that this isn’t a formal photo shoot, it’s just some playtime with you while I take photos. The more relaxed they feel, the more natural and joyful the images will be.

Make sure they’re well-rested and fed.

A little snack and a nap before the session can make a big difference. We’ll go with their pace, take breaks when needed, and keep things gentle.

Let them be themselves.

Don’t worry if your child wants to run around, jump on the couch, or snuggle quietly. Every emotion and every moment is part of your story, I’ll capture it all beautifully.

Have a few favorite things nearby.

A beloved toy, blanket, or book can help kids feel comfortable and can even become a sweet part of your photos.

Don’t stress about perfection.

Real moments are the magic ones — giggles, messy hair, cuddles, and all. The goal isn’t for everyone to pose perfectly but to capture your family’s connection just as it is.

For babies:

Feed and change them right before we start if possible. Keep a few extra outfits, wipes, and blankets nearby. If they need a break, that’s totally okay — we’ll take our time.

4. Posing (or not posing at all)

Please don’t worry about knowing what to do in front of the camera — that’s my job! I’ll gently guide you through everything so you never feel awkward or unsure. Most of the time, I’ll simply encourage you to connect with your loved ones — cuddle on the couch, play with your kids, share a quiet moment, or laugh together.

It’s less about posing and more about being present. The sweetest, most emotional photos always happen in between the “poses” — when your child reaches for your hand, when you look at each other and smile, when you forget the camera is even there.

Your only task is to relax, be yourselves, and enjoy this time as a family. I’ll take care of the rest.

5. How long does the session take

In-home sessions usually last around 1–2 hours, but there’s no strict timing. Every family is different, and I like to go with the flow of your day. Some sessions take a little less time, while others unfold more slowly — especially with little ones (or pets!).

What matters most is that everyone feels comfortable and unhurried, allowing those genuine, emotional moments to naturally unfold.
